We have two kids ages 3 and 11 months so we have a lot of gates up in our two story house. This one is the nicest one we own.It looks the best, closes by itself, goes both ways and has a "stay open" option which is great if doing laundry or something and you need both hands to hold something big.I installed it in 10 minutes from opening the box and had no troubles at all. It looks bent when you take it out of the box, but as you add the required tension it straitens out perfectly.Make sure you do not need a gate wider than the maximum width of 38.25"- there are not additional extensions to buy.The color will work well in most homes, it is that trendy dark rubbed bronze color which will probably be out of vogue in a few years but who cares.The self-closing function is pretty quiet so you can actually use it without waking a sleeping kiddo, you don't need to hold your hand behind you as you go through.The only reason we never bought one of these before is price, buying 7 gates meant looking for cheaper ones, but if you just need one gate this is a great option. So glad we got it, we use it in the one area we use the most since it is the easiest to use.

This is a very good quality baby gate (or pet gate / dog gate as in my case) that I was able to unpack and set up in minutes. The tension knobs have a rubberized coating on them to reduce slipping when inserted into a door frame, and they come with wall mountable cups that can be screwed or adhered to the wall to hold the tension knobs firmly in place for more permanent mounting or at a staircase. The screws and two-sided adhesive for the cups are both included. The matte (dull) bronze color looks more brown than bronze, but is still attractive looking.What sets this gate apart aside from its quality appearance, is the swing gate itself and latching mechanism. If the gate is opened all the way, it will stay open, but if it is only opened part way, it automatically swings closed (neither of my other gates does this). The gate swings both ways. The gate has a spring loaded tab at the bottom and at the main latch that both latch automatically when the gate swings closed -these are two of the advertised three point latch. The main latch can also be rotated to lock (the third point of the three point latch). To open the latched gate, you have to rotate the main latch (if it has been rotated locked), slide the lock on the main latch and lift the gate slightly to clear the latch tab and swing open. This may seem like a lot of steps, but if your child is at that age where they figure things out quickly, the extra steps may bring peace of mind -especially at the top of the stairs (one of my other gates has just a slide lock and lift to swing open, and the other has a slide lock and lift-latch and swings open freely).I occasionally foster rescue dogs and have my own. I am currently using this gate to keep the dogs from entering the garage from the house. I have the gate ajar, with the latch locked (rotated closed) and on the inside of the frame (swinging in). If I am in and out of the garage with my hands full of stuff, I can swing the gate open without unlatching it and it closes automatically behind me without latching. Since the dogs haven't figured out how to pull the gate open, they can't push through it into the garage (and out into the world if the big door is open). This is a nice feature to have for a hands free self closing gate. Without having to latch and unlatch it every time I pass through it, it still does what I need it to. The other gate I use to bar the kitchen doesn't close automatically, so I had to install it on an angle so that the gate swings closed on its own -not that attractive or fool proof.This gate comes with two extensions and fits a 30" doorway with no extensions attached, fits a 32" doorway with one extension, fits a 36" doorway (usually an external door at this size) with both extensions, and would fit an opening of up to about 38" with both extensions attached and the tension knobs all the way out.

We have had babies and puppies in this house off and on, in various sizes, colors, and genders, for the past 30 years. We have had those awful sliding gates with the diamond shaped covered wire, we have had plastic gates, and we have had fabric gates. The one thing those gates all have in common is that as annoying as it is to go over them, (and every baby we had went over them as easily as walking by age 1), it was still easier to go over them than to take them out and put them back. This one having a door to open is a wonderful improvement on all of the gates of the past. The door can be left in an open position when not exercising containment procedures.This one is also very nice looking in our 100 year-old farmhouse. The style of it is perfectly suited.I had been looking for a picture of a half door to talk my husband into putting one between the kitchen and the living room. I don't mind the mud, but I would like it to be better contained. (Our backyard has 4 seasons - mud, mud, mud, and mud.)This gate is a great temporary solution! It was really easy to put in place. I experimented with different doorways to see how it would work to put the additional panels in and it was not difficult at all even though there are contradictory explanations of which side the longer end of the pin goes into. It says one thing in the writing and the opposite in the exploded picture.I know this gate is temporary though because someone is going to get hurt stubbing an entire foot on the panel across the bottom. It is also probably going to be me because I tend to go barefoot. My toes cringe at the thought.UPDATE: This gate is working out so well that the room formerly known as the kitchen is now known as the puppy containment area.
